About the column

Tom’s Tech Report is a daily column about what Washington is doing to technology: AI legislation, FTC and FCC actions, export controls on chips and models, copyright and the court fights that decide how software gets built and sold.

The column reads the primary documents, including bill text, complaints, rules and orders, and explains what they change for the people who build products. Opinions are labeled as opinions, and facts are cited.

Got a tip on a rule or docket worth reading? The column reads everything that’s public.

how it's sourced

Every factual claim carries a bracketed number that links to a numbered source at the bottom of the post. Primary documents come first: bill text, Federal Register rules, complaints, orders and dockets. Each post ends with a short note on what couldn't be verified or retrieved.

Opinion is labeled as opinion, and it's about how a policy is drafted and what it does to people building products, not about parties. Subscribe by RSS.
